Treat Me Like A 6-Year-Old

From design blog CSS Tricks comes a great article about how to request changes from a web designer.

The trouble is emails like this:

Hi, Matt — Could you pls. correct the date on the website? Thx!

You may think I'm joking or exaggerating, but I get that kind of thing all the time. It's annoying, sure, but more importantly, it causes delays while a designer emails back and forth trying to figure out exactly what changes are being requested. Chris Coyier, the author, suggest that you always answer these questions fully:

  • What page needs changing (URL link!)
  • Does it appear in multiple places?
  • What does is say now?
  • What should it say?
  • When does it need to be done?

Answer all those together before being asked and your web designer will love you. And though you may not be in it for your web designer's love, you'll quickly find that a happy freelancer is a dedicated freelancer who goes the extra mile on all your jobs.
